Nissan's compact crossover SUV continues to be a popular choice with motorists racking up European sales of over 100,000, it has emerged.

According to the Athlone Advertiser, the Japanese manufacturer's Qashqai model reached the landmark figure at the end of November as many drivers, including those with approved Car Finance, drove the vehicle home from their local forecourts.

The newspaper writes that for many motorists the innovative design and five-star Euro NCAP safety rating has allowed the car to compete with the likes of Renault's Megane and Laguna as well as the Kia Sportage and Hyundai's Santa Fe.

"Initial European customer feedback shows that buyers like the Qashqai for bringing something new to the market; for its strong, distinctive design which sits between a traditional hatchback style and a more robust, elevated SUV shape," the newspaper reports.

The Qashqai is known as the Dualis in Japan and Australia, and the Rogue in North America, it is thought that sales of the car in the UK since 2006 have now reached 17,554.
