Jeep Cherokee

Recommended. The legendary American off-roader is fun to drive and looks great. It has excellent 4x4 ability, and the retro styling hides a very up-to-date vehicle.

Jeep Grand Cherokee

Average. Vastly better than the model it replaces - but still nothing like as good on road as its key rivals.

Jeep Wrangler

Not Recommended. Very capable off road, but who's going to be buying it for that? A gas-guzzler of the first order and a security nightmare.

Jeep Grand Cherokee (94 - 05)

Average. A big, tough off-roader the way such things all used to be. Good in the mud, well constructed, but performs poorly on tarmac and petrol versions have a monstrous thirst.

Jeep Commander

Recommended. Jeep customers took against the recent soft-edged Cherokee and asked why it didn't have seven seats. The result is the Commander - seven seats and as hard-edged as a set-square.

Jeep Patriot

Average. Jeep's most impressive model for a while, although it's not without flaws. Genuine off-road ability, adequate on-road finesse and rugged looks will appeal - but not as much as the Patriot's budget price tag.

Jeep Compass

Not Recommended. Not as good as it looks, and it doesn't look that good. Exactly the opposite of everything a Jeep should be.
