Jeep Grand Cherokee (94 - 05)

Ratings

3 stars

Summary

Average. A big, tough off-roader the way such things all used to be. Good in the mud, well constructed, but performs poorly on tarmac and petrol versions have a monstrous thirst.

Review

The daddy Jeep is starting to feel very old, competing as it is against a new class of road-biased sports utility vehicles (SUVs). It looks handsome, feels well constructed and offers excellent standard equipment. But the separate chassis makes for an uncomfortable, heavy-footed ride and poor steering responses. For something so large the Grand's cabin is also incredibly cramped, especially in the back, and luggage space is also poor. V8 petrol engines have plenty of performance at the cost of abysmal fuel consumption. CRD turbodiesel (a Mercedes-Benz unit) is the best engine choice: gruff sounding, powerful and easy on the go-juice.
