Highly recommended. One of the more gloriously unlikely of recent mega-cars, the Carrera GT is based around an abandoned race engine project. It's ultra expensive, ultra exclusive - and amazing to drive.
Putting the Carrera GT into perspective is a tricky task: for its vast pricetag you could buy a comprehensive fleet of Porsche's other products. It's the automotive equivalent of vanity publishing, an ultimate-mega-hyper rival to cars like the Mercedes McLaren SLR and Ferrari Enzo. At its heart lies a 5.7 litre V10 engine, originally designed to power Porsche's proposed Le Mans racer. The project was cancelled in late '99, with the Carrera GT then designed around the fully-built engine, including the race car's carbonfibre chassis tub and pushrod operated suspension. The looks are slightly bland for some, but the Carrera's effectiveness cannot be questioned: 62 mph comes from rest in just 3.6 seconds, 124 mph in a tenth of a second under ten. And there's handling to match, too: predictable, responsive and amazingly unintimidating when you get close to the massively high limits. Zero effective luggage space means limited everyday practicality - but for the GT's likely clientele, that's hardly an issue.
