Porsche Boxster (96-04)

Ratings

5 stars

Summary

Highly recommended. The baby Porsche but it still offers the grown-up driving experience. Excellent performance, sparkling dynamics and cast iron residuals help to justify the hype.

Review

The Boxster has successfully proved wrong all those who greeted its arrival with claims it wasn't a 'proper' Porsche. Mid-mounted flat-six engines give excellent performance and the familiar Porsche soundtrack. Handling is almost peerless thanks to instantaneous reactions, massive grip and instinctive behaviour should the high limits be breached. Cabin is predictably tight, and it feels gloomy with the canvas roof in place. Limited luggage space is the downside, and what space there is is split between the front and rear boots. Entry-level 2.7 engine gives plenty of urge, but the 3.2 'S' version gives the full experience.
